Yasamasa Morimura

Morimura is what is called an appropriation artist.  meaning that he appropriates famous works, or famous portraits of famous people and puts himself in as the main subject.  There is some controversy over this, but I love the cheekiness.  The man is clearly fearless and points out the "iconotropy" that develops for famous artworks: people no longer really see them.  And this is the healthiest and most entertaining form of narcissism ever.  In fact, it's quite selfless in a way ;~)

  2. So do I, but Lou Rich Gibbs had posted on Square a rant about sampling and I disagreed that it is theft. I posted this as rebuttal ;~∆

  4. Cheeky indeed! Thanks for turning me on to this artist! Love his sass. Reminds me of Richard D James (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoJeiRVnlu8 , in case you don't know what I mean, here's an example... skip in to the mid-point for the images I'm referring to)
Banksy has nabbed and altered others work in fantastic ways too (enhancements!)
    This is Michelle, btw.

  5. Hey Michelle! Yes, I forgot about Banksy. These people aren't stealing. They are making art about art. Like I said, there is no disguising the original piece so how is it theft?
I will check out the link!
